Lake Como is strategically placed as the entry from the north towards Milan. Defences have been built along its course from Roman times, particularly at Colico where the Spanish built the Forte di Fuentes in the 1600s and the Forte Montecchio was built in 1914 as part of Italy’s defense against attack across the Splugen Pass.
